چکیده

Previous studies in man have indicated that administration of either plant sterols or unsaturated dietary fats causes decreases in certain serum lipids. This report presents the results of a long-term 7-phase study of the comparative effects of the single and combined administration of plant sterols (p-sitosterol) and a highly unsaturated vegetable oil (safflower oil) in 15 ambulatory subjects. The serum lipid changes observed indicate that both agents act on the same low-density lipoprotein fraction, that the changes produced by /-sitosterol and by safflower oil are similar in magnitude, but that the combination has a .55 per cent greater effect than either agent alone, that the mechanisms of action of these 2 agents probably differ, and that the action of the safflower oil is probably not due to the amount of sitosterol it contains.

The effect of dietary safflower phospholipid and soybean phospholipid on plasma and liver lipids in rats fed a hypercholesterolemic diet.

The effect of dietary safflower phospholipid (Saf-PL) and soybean phospholipid (Soy-PL) on plasma, liver, and fecal lipids in rats fed a hypercholesterolemic diet was compared with that of triglyceride mixture (controls). Triglyceride mixture (SP-Oil) of safflower oil and palm oil (8:2) contained almost comparable amounts of linoleic acid to safflower phospholipid or soybean phospholipid. Conce...

Effects of coconut oil, butter, and safflower oil on lipids and lipoproteins in persons with moderately elevated cholesterol levels.

The physiological effects of coconut oil, butter, and safflower oil on lipids and lipoproteins have been compared in moderately hypercholesterolemic individuals. Twenty eight participants (13 men, 15 women) followed three 6-week experimental diets of similar macronutrient distribution with the different test fats providing 50% total dietary fat. Total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cho...

Effect of dietary safflower phospholipid on plasma and liver lipids in rats fed a hypercholesterolemic diet.

The effect of safflower phospholipid (SP) on plasma and liver lipids in rats fed a hypercholesterolemic diet was examined. Triglyceride mixture (SPO) of safflower oil and palm oil (8:2) containing almost comparable amounts of linoleic acid to safflower phospholipid was used as a control diet. Similarly, the effect of paste safflower phospholipid (PSP) which contains approximately 45% of neutral...
